I have copied the full article here as I have found it really interestng.
The basic principle of "sustainable design" is to reduce the
environmental impact of products. It requires people to change their
behaviors. Innovators of design know that they have an immense impact on consumer purchasing power.
How do designers go about changing human behavior?
Designers
consider human, technology and business factors. They can help identify
a behavioral goals (recycle, reduce, reuse, etc.) and advocate for the
best products or systems to make the changes that effect our future.
Whether the design discipline is product design, architectural,
industrial, interior, fashion, graphic design or advertising, the
designer's influence to create positive changes is key. This is
especially important since design can change the rate and attitudes of
consumption.
Can people's behavior be changed for the common good?
Ever since the advent of green, designers have been coming up with creative and innovative answers to finding out how to get people to go green. Tim Brown, CEO of the design firm IDEO finds the field of design should shift to incorporate more behavioral aspects of the people they target. Brown cites
Thomas Edison's approach as an early example of what is now called
"design thinking" or a methodology that imbues a full spectrum of design
ideas with a human-centered and more sustainable design ethos.
"By
this I mean that innovation is powered by a thorough understanding,
through direct observation, of what people want and need in their lives
and what they like or dislike about the way particular products are
made, packaged, marketed, sold, and supported."
